The band meeting for 6th grade parents has been cancelled and a new date will be communicated as soon as possible.

Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m, today, Monday, August 28, 2023 due to potential flooding. All evening activities are canceled and after school childcare will close at 5:00 p.m. Surry County Schools has worked with the National Weather Service and Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor weather conditions throughout the morning. Last night, areas of Surry County received 3-6 inches of rain. As a result, there was localized flooding in northern Surry County this morning. More rainfall is expected this afternoon, which could create additional flooding issues across many areas of Surry County. Therefore, Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m. to ensure students return home ahead of additional projected rainfall. Thank you for your continued support of Surry County Schools and please use caution as you travel this evening.

Flat Rock Elementary School will be dismissing today, Monday, August 28, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. due to power outage. All students will be sent home with bagged lunches. This outage is currently affecting over 1,233 Duke Energy customers and a crew has been assigned to restore power. The estimated time of restoration is 5:00 p.m. At Surry County Schools, safety is our top priority. Given the unknowns of the situation as well as the potential flexibility of the estimated time of restoration, we feel it is in the best interest of families for Flat Rock Elementary to dismiss early. Surry County Emergency Services has informed the district that Pine Street will be open shortly after being closed temporarily this morning due to flooding. At this time, Flat Rock Elementary School is the only school impacted, all other schools are on normal schedule today. The district is continuing to closely monitor weather conditions due to reports of heavy rain and flooding in areas of Surry County. The district is working with Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor conditions throughout the day.

There will be a meeting for 6th grade band students and parents on August 28th.  Sessions will begin at 5:30, 6:00, and 6:30 pm.  Please attend the session that works best in your schedule. If you have not completed the Annual Update in the PowerSchool Parent Portal, please do so as soon as possible.  If you need assistance, call the school and ask to speak to Mrs. Adams. Yearbooks are currently on sale.  You can purchase one online at jostensyearbooks.com or you can send in the payment with your child.  The total cost of the yearbook including tax is $37.45. Each week, the sixth grade will recognize a "Student of the Week". These students are selected for their leadership attributes and their contribution to making PMMS top-notch! This week, we recognize Mayrin Rodriguez-Perez. Mayrin is always prepared, on-task, and working hard. She comes with a positive attitude and is always willing to help others around her. She is a leader on our hallway in her efforts and attitude. We are proud to recognize Mayrin as our Student of the Week for this week.

New for the 2023-2024 School Year! FREE Breakfast and Lunch NO COST BREAKFAST & LUNCH for ALL Elementary & Middle School students as part of the Community Eligibility Provision or CEP. The Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a USDA school meal funding option that enables schools to provide free meals to students. Just like textbooks and computers, under CEP, school meals are available to students at no cost to them at designated schools. Families with High School students are encouraged to apply for free & reduced meals using the traditional process. Families that receive FNS benefits from DSS do not need to apply! As a culminating activity on the study of early man, 6th-grade students in Social Studies class stepped back in time to create their own primitive drawings. Students quickly realized how difficult it is to write a story on "animal hide", using sticks, paint, and no words.

Our 6th-grade class has been studying about graphing in the coordinate plane. Today, to review skills, we completed a cooperative Quiz Quiz Trade activity. Classmates quizzed each other on skills related to graphing points in the coordinate plane. #RavensRock
