Flat Rock Elementary School will be dismissing today, Monday, August 28, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. due to power outage. All students will be sent home with bagged lunches. This outage is currently affecting over 1,233 Duke Energy customers and a crew has been assigned to restore power. The estimated time of restoration is 5:00 p.m.
At Surry County Schools, safety is our top priority. Given the unknowns of the situation as well as the potential flexibility of the estimated time of restoration, we feel it is in the best interest of families for Flat Rock Elementary to dismiss early. Surry County Emergency Services has informed the district that Pine Street will be open shortly after being closed temporarily this morning due to flooding.
At this time, Flat Rock Elementary School is the only school impacted, all other schools are on normal schedule today. The district is continuing to closely monitor weather conditions due to reports of heavy rain and flooding in areas of Surry County. The district is working with Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor conditions throughout the day.

Good afternoon. This is Principal Shannon DuPlessis. When something occurs on our school campus, I want to keep you informed and provide you with accurate information.
At approximately 11:35 a.m. today, administrators were made aware of a strong smell and smoke in the vocational building. As a result, all students and staff in the vocational building were evacuated. The Pilot Mountain Fire Department responded and it was discovered that a ballast shorted in a fluorescent light bulb. Students and staff remained outside for only a short amount of time and no students or staff were injured during this event. Classes in the vocational building have been relocated for the remainder of the day and have resumed. School will be dismissed at the regularly scheduled time.
I appreciate all students and staff for evacuating the building in a safe and timely manner, as well as the Pilot Mountain Fire Department for their quick response.
Safety is the highest priority for Surry County Schools and we are all working diligently every day to ensure the safety of our students and staff. We appreciate everyone’s efforts to work with us in that process.
It’s a beautiful day in Surry County! Why? Because today we got to say welcome back to teachers and staff in one of the best ways: Convocation!
This year’s theme, Thrive, was the emphasis of the program. Employees were invited to Pilot Mountain Middle School where they got to mingle with local community and business partners, along with a program featuring remarks from dynamic leaders in the district. Door prizes collected from local businesses were given away to lucky employees!
Thank you to everyone involved who made this event possible! #ThriveSCS
