Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m, today, Monday, August 28, 2023 due to potential flooding. All evening activities are canceled and after school childcare will close at 5:00 p.m.
Surry County Schools has worked with the National Weather Service and Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor weather conditions throughout the morning. Last night, areas of Surry County received 3-6 inches of rain. As a result, there was localized flooding in northern Surry County this morning.
More rainfall is expected this afternoon, which could create additional flooding issues across many areas of Surry County. Therefore, Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m. to ensure students return home ahead of additional projected rainfall.
Thank you for your continued support of Surry County Schools and please use caution as you travel this evening.

Surry County Emergency Services has informed the district that Pine Street will be open shortly after being closed temporarily this morning due to flooding.
At this time, Flat Rock Elementary School is the only school impacted, all other schools are on normal schedule today. The district is continuing to closely monitor weather conditions due to reports of heavy rain and flooding in areas of Surry County. The district is working with Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor conditions throughout the day.

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx's 13th annual Teacher in Congress Internship Program occurred July 21-28, 2023. The internship program is held in the Congresswoman’s Washington, D.C. congressional office and consists of learning activities, including an introduction to the legislative process; tours of the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, and area museums; briefings with House committee staff; and attending hearings, mark-ups and floor debates. This program is an opportunity offered to public and private school educators in North Carolina’s 5th District who teach grades nine through twelve. One of this year’s attendees was Stephen Young, Social Studies Teacher at Surry Central High School.
Representative Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) issued the following statement on the conclusion of this year's program: “It was my pleasure to welcome Stephen Young and Samuel Tarleton – two exceptional educators in the 5th District – to Washington, D.C. for my 13th annual Teacher in Congress Internship Program. From attending committee hearings to watching floor debates, touring the U.S. Capitol to attending briefings, Stephen and Samuel had a first-hand look into Congress’ rich history and how it operates. It is my hope that this experience was as rewarding as it was insightful for them both.”
