#SCSUpdates | Surry County Schools will operate on a regular schedule tomorrow, Friday, January 17, with limited bus routes. We have seen great improvement in road conditions across Surry County. However, some bus turnarounds continue to be inaccessible due to snow removal piles. This means buses will not travel on dirt roads, dead-end roadways, or cul-de-sacs. Families who live on these roadways, please reference our limited bus routes list on our website to locate your child’s corner stop. Based on the improved road conditions, there will be no community stops tomorrow. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep students safe. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

Our goal for this month is: I can share ideas clearly and effectively. Our leaders also talked about the food drive that SAVE Promise will be hosting until February 7th! You can send any non-perishable food into the school and food will be donated to local families. There will be prizes for the top three classes!

#SCSUpdates | Here is the schedule and transportation update for Thursday, January 16, 2025. Please read carefully to ensure you have all the information you need for tomorrow. 1. Due to the lingering effects of recent inclement weather, Surry County Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay. 2. We will operate this 2-hour delay with limited bus routes. Buses will not travel down dirt or dead-end roadways. Families who live on dead-end or dirt roads, please reference our limited bus routes list on our website to locate your child’s corner stop. 3. As a further measure to ensure the safety of our students, we will be implementing our community bus stop plan. Here’s what families need to know: - For the roads that have been deemed unsafe and impassable, your child’s school will contact you shortly with the location of your assigned community bus stop. This list can also be found on our district website. - In the morning, designated activity buses will be stationed at specific community bus stops. These buses will serve as warm, safe waiting areas for students while they wait for their yellow school bus to arrive. Parents and guardians should plan to drop off their children at the assigned stop during the designated drop-off window. The drop-off window at all community bus stops is from 8:30a.m - 9:30 a.m. School staff and drivers will supervise students until they board their yellow school bus for transportation to school. - In the afternoon, parents should plan to meet buses at the designated community bus stops. - The afternoon time for parents to pick up students from the designated community stops are from 3:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. School staff and drivers will supervise students until they are picked up from their community bus stop. Those who are picking up students in the afternoon will need photo identification to sign out their student. - Both breakfast and lunch will be provided tomorrow. If you plan to drive your child directly to and from school, please be aware that some secondary roads may still be icy. Allow extra travel time, drive cautiously, and take the safest route available to ensure your safety. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students and staff. This plan is for tomorrow, January 16, 2025. Our Inclement Weather Team will monitor highly impacted roads, temperatures, and melt to determine transportation plans for Friday, January 17. Transportation plans for Friday will be communicated out Thursday evening. Stay safe, and we look forward to seeing your children tomorrow. Have a great evening!

#SCSUpdates | As of today, there are 83 students in our district that are experiencing homelessness. This is a 98% increase from last year at this point in the school year. With that being said, school social workers and staff members are doing a great job with identifying students who might qualify under the McKinney-Vento Act. With the weather changes, students who are experiencing homelessness can be affected and how they might present themselves. Some signs that you might see could include the following: complaining about being cold frequently, missing gloves or hats, not having proper winter footwear, wearing the same clothes repeatedly, even when visibly dirty, or wearing clothes that are too small or too big for their size. If you suspect a student is experiencing homelessness due to cold weather, please use the QR code to contact Paris Green, HMS POC.
