Surry County Schools is committed to ensuring the safety of our students, staff, families, and community members who attend athletic events at our schools. To further enhance security, the district will implement metal detectors at middle and high school football games beginning on August 29, 2024.

This new measure is an extension of the district’s existing safety protocols, which include a clear bag policy. Metal detectors will be in place at the entrances of athletic venues to prevent the introduction of prohibited items and ensure the safety of all attendees. These enhancements are a part of our ongoing efforts to maintain a secure environment while continuing to enjoy the excitement and spirit of our school sports.

"We are constantly evaluating and improving our safety procedures to protect our school communities," said Dr. Travis L. Reeves, Superintendent of Surry County Schools. "The addition of metal detectors at our athletic events reinforces our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming atmosphere for everyone. We appreciate the community's cooperation and understanding as we implement these important changes."

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to allow time for the security screenings. The clear bag policy remains in effect, requiring that any bags brought into events be transparent to allow for quick and easy inspections.

Surry County Schools appreciates the continued support of parents, students, and community members as we work together to create a safe and secure environment at all school events.
