The Surry County Board of Education has accepted multiple draft calendars for public comment for the 2025-2026 school year. Potential start dates include August 7, 2024, August 11, 2024, August 13, 2024, and August 25, 2024.
These calendars are available for public comment for the next 30 days, and those who wish to contribute feedback are encouraged to fill out the attached Google form or contact the Surry County Schools Administrative Offices at (336)386-8211.

Last week, some local churches came together to bring each one of our students a backpack filled with Christmas goodies. Thank you for going above and beyond for our students!









We will be having our Christmas Spirit Week next week, December 16th-20th!

Flat Rock Baptist Church came to visit our students yesterday with Christmas goodie bags. Thank you Flat Rock Baptist Church!










Our K-2 students can't wait to see you tonight at their Christmas Program!
Students should be there by 5:45 and the program will start at 6:00.


#SCSUpdates | Calling elementary parents who would like to serve on our district-level Title I Parent Advisory Council for Parent & Family Engagement. We would love to have your voice! There will be 4 meetings occurring between December 2024 through November 2025. They will be held virtually and/or in-person, depending on what the Title I PAC chooses to do. Please share your interest by completing the interest survey form, which you can access via the QR code or link. Each elementary school should have a minimum of 2 PAC representatives. We will verify your child attends one of our elementary schools, and you cannot be an employee of Surry County Schools.

Flat Rock Elementary School's November Students of the Month are: Jimena Carranza-Quiro, Konner Dollyhite, Isaac Guarneros, James Harrell, Ezra Mitchell, Baylee Donathan, Marco Guarneros, Natalio Hernandez, Mariyah Walker, Wyatt Dollyhite, Melanie Gonzalez-Perez, and Whit King. Abigail Nieto-Hernandez and Aaron Jones are the Bus Riders of the Month. The leadership attribute showcased was integrity.

Today, our 4th and 5th grade classroom spelling bee winners competed against each other in our school spelling bee.

#SCSUpdates | Due to a light dusting of snow on a number of roadways in the Flat Rock, Slate Mountain, and Westfield communities, Surry County Schools will operate on a 3-hour delay on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.


First Grade celebrated Thanksgiving by reading the book, Balloons Over Broadway. Students decorated their own balloons and engineered them to be carried by BeeBots. The BeeBots were coded to travel through the hallway!





Ms. Coe’s class completed a Shape Hunt around the school today to look for the 2D shapes they have been learning about!






We love our staff at Flat Rock Elementary! For American Education Week, which was the week of November 18-22, Flat Rock SAVE Promise Club / Student Council delivered “Thank You " notes and a treat to our staff to celebrate them and show them appreciation. The note states, “We are so lucky to have you! Thank you for all you do!”

1st Grade started learning about shapes and went on a Shape Scavenger Hunt in their classroom today!







#SCSTransportation | Yesterday, Surry County Transportation picked up five of the nine new diesel buses our county will receive this school year, thanks to the NC Bus Replacement Plan! These buses will help ensure safer and more efficient transportation for our students.

Students enjoyed working with clay in art class with Mrs Simmons last week.

Last Friday, Mrs. Simmons’ Art Club enjoyed making dragon ornaments for our school. We also want to say thank you to our special volunteers and their donations that helped make this happen! Thank you for supporting Art Club!
