Weekly Message from Mrs. Hazelwood: 9/10/23 Good evening, Tiger Families! This is Mrs. Hazelwood calling with Tiger news! First off, thank you families for supporting our $1 raffle ticket fundraiser. With your help, our final total was over $12,000! That is amazing! This money will be used for continuous school improvement and resources for teachers and students! This week is Book Fair Week! Students are welcome to shop for books in our media center! Parents may come in and shop with their child after school each day until 3:30. Monday, September 11th is Grounded Coffee Spirit Day! Stop by one of our favorite coffee shops and let them know you are there to support Dobson Elementary! A percentage of the profit goes to our school. Our student leaders of the month will celebrate on Wednesday with Mr. King. We are proud of our tigers leading self! On Thursday, progress reports will go home. Sit down with your child and set goals for the remainder of the quarter. On Thursday, student council will meet. Please send a note if your child plans to stay. Finally, there is no school on Friday, September 15th due to a teacher workday. Thank you in advance for reading with your child each night. Our first semester reading trip will be in December. We are setting goals for reading in class each day. Encourage your child to find a book to enjoy! Have a wonderful week! Good night!

We had lots of fun things going on today relating to our Raffle Ticket Fundraiser! Students who sold 10 books of tickets were invited to an ice cream party this afternoon with Mrs. Hazelwood. What a reward! 🍦

Surry Central will be hosting a Fall Carnival and Powder Puff Game on Friday, September 22nd, with the carnival beginning at 5:30 and the Powder Puff Game beginning at 7:30! This event is for helping seniors raise money for a senior trip!

Bus Riders of the Month: Ragnar Gosselin Carolina Hernandez Villicana Melanie Vega Talia Gearheart Melanie McMillian Carlos Menera-Rojas These tigers enjoyed popsicles and time at the park with Mrs. Queen for showing leadership on the bus and following expectations! 🚍🤩

This morning, students AND staff participated in "D.E.A.R." time. This meant that everyone dropped what they were doing, grabbed a book, and started reading for 20 minutes. Not only does this encourage our tigers to associate positivity with literature and the act of reading, but also to make it a priority for themselves. Great job, tigers! 🧡 #ThriveSCS #DEAR

Grounded Coffee Spirit Day!

We are bringing Trunk-or-Treat back to Dobson Elementary School next month! Please note that this is ONLY for DES students during the school day. Mr. King taught a lesson to Mrs. Coe's class about following rules. They practiced doing so by playing "Simon Says"!

Just a reminder that our very first ROAR celebration will be tomorrow, and it is Water Day! This will be for students who have shown ROAR leadership during this first month of school. Please be sure that your child wears sunscreen and brings both a towel and a change of clothes! 💦🤿☀️ We are also still in need of volunteers for some of the water stations. Please contact the school or your child's teacher if you are interested in helping with this fun celebration!

Our SRO, Officer Levesque, has been visiting classrooms to discuss important safety topics with students. This was very helpful for our tigers to not only become more knowledgeable of and practice safety skills, but also to FEEL safe! Thank you, Officer Levesque! #ThriveSCS

Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m, today, Monday, August 28, 2023 due to potential flooding. All evening activities are canceled and after school childcare will close at 5:00 p.m. Surry County Schools has worked with the National Weather Service and Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor weather conditions throughout the morning. Last night, areas of Surry County received 3-6 inches of rain. As a result, there was localized flooding in northern Surry County this morning. More rainfall is expected this afternoon, which could create additional flooding issues across many areas of Surry County. Therefore, Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m. to ensure students return home ahead of additional projected rainfall.
