NSHS HOSA Group

Surry County Schools recently hosted a Healthcare Career Exploration Day, bringing together HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) clubs from all four district high schools to learn about healthcare opportunities in the community. The event, made possible through a grant secured by Dena Cave, was held at Surry Community College on Friday, February 14.

Students were welcomed by Dr. David Shockley, President of Surry Community College, before rotating through various healthcare-related learning experiences.

Dr. Andrea Underwood, the new director of SCC’s Nursing Department, introduced students to different nursing degree options and provided a hands-on tour of the nursing labs. Kenneth Vaught, EMS Program Coordinator, gave an overview of the EMS program, highlighting essential skills for success in emergency medical services.

Jordin Beasley, Northwest Region HOSA President, and Ja’Aura Fonville, Northwest Region Treasurer—both students at Surry Early College High School—shared insights on leadership opportunities within the HOSA organization, encouraging students to get involved and develop their leadership skills.

The event also featured a career fair in the SCC gym, where students connected with local healthcare partners, including Northern Regional Hospital, Mountain Valley Hospice, LabCorp, Gates Pharmacy, Choice Physical Therapy, the American Red Cross, Central Continuing Care, Surry County EMS, and Surry-Yadkin Works.

A highlight of the day was a special presentation by Dr. Jason Edsall from Northern Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department. Dr. Edsall shared his personal journey in the healthcare field, provided valuable insights into the profession, and took time to engage with students, answering their questions and offering encouragement.

Surry County Schools appreciates the support of Surry Community College, local healthcare partners, and professionals like Dr. Edsall, who help inspire the next generation of healthcare workers. This event was a valuable experience for students exploring careers in the medical field, and we look forward to continued collaboration in promoting rural healthcare opportunities.
