BOE poses with Mr. Goings

The Surry County Board of Education recently honored longtime board member Clark Goings upon his retirement from the board. Mr. Goings, who has faithfully served the school system and the community, was celebrated at a special reception on November 4, 2024. Former board members, community leaders, and his family gathered to recognize his dedication and contributions to the students and schools of Surry County.

Clark Goings first joined the Surry County Board of Education in early 2012, filling the District Five seat after the passing of former board member Jeff Hall. At the time of his appointment, Board Chairman Earlie Coe praised Goings for his leadership and strong qualifications, stating that he would be a “real asset to the board.” Goings took the oath of office on February 1, 2012, and quickly established himself as a dedicated advocate for students and educators alike.

Throughout his tenure, Goings played a key role in guiding critical decisions for the school system. His leadership and commitment to education were evident in his ongoing efforts to support students, teachers, and school initiatives. A lifelong resident of Surry County, he brought valuable experience to the board, having previously served in numerous leadership roles, including past president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer of the Beulah Ruritan Club. His service extended beyond education, as he also volunteered as a judge for the Surry County Schools Science Fair for many years and served on the North Surry High School Board for three years.

In addition to his contributions to education, Goings dedicated 25 years to the Surry Telephone Membership Corporation Board of Directors and spent 36 years working as an insurance agent with NC Farm Bureau, Southern Farm Bureau Life, and Blue Cross-Blue Shield of North Carolina. His extensive experience in leadership and public service made him a respected and valued member of the Board of Education.

Reflecting on his service, Goings shared in a 2012 interview that he had always had a positive experience with Surry County Schools and was eager to be an asset to the board. “I’m really interested in the children of Surry County,” he said at the time. His passion for education and his commitment to serving his community remained evident throughout his years on the board.

The Surry County Board of Education extends its deepest gratitude to Clark Goings for his years of service and dedication to lighting pathways to global success for Surry County students. His leadership and commitment have left a lasting impact, and his presence on the board will be greatly missed.
