On Friday, December 13, 2024, all Surry County middle schools attended the district MathCounts competition at Central Middle School with 28 students participating. From this competition, all students will move forward to the regional event in Winston-Salem on February, 15, 2025.
The competition lasted about two-and-a-half hours, using the same format that will be used at the regional competition. Each segment was timed, with some portions completed individually and others as a team. Certain segments allowed calculators and some did not. Each segment comprised the scoring for individual and team honors.
Meadowview Magnet Middle School team was declared the overall winner of the district competition! All four Surry County Schools middle schools will participate at the regional level. Friday’s event was great practice for all teams. The Meadowview Magnet Middle team representatives were Addison Cornett, Chloe Lopez-Hernandez, Colton Leonard, Jasmyn Billings, Jonas Cagle, Kate Wilkins, Makayla Hutchens, Matthew Vernon, and Noah Inman.
The individual winner of the competition was Matthew Vernon from Meadowview Magnet Middle School. Matthew was the individual champion after competing in the individual round by answering the most questions correctly from all competitors from each school.
Addison Cornett, representing Meadowview Magnet Middle School, was the Countdown Round Champion. The top 10 individuals from the Target and Sprint rounds compete in the Countdown Round. It was exciting to see such a high level of competition among students!

It is exciting for them to enjoy being with their peers and showcasing their mathematics abilities, both individually and collaboratively.
