During the December Board of Education work session, the following leadership transitions were approved, with the majority of the changes taking effect in early 2025.
Kevin Via, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, will retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Via served at Central Middle School as a teacher, at North Surry High School as an Assistant Principal, and at Surry Central High School and Surry Early College High School as a Principal. He transitioned into his role as Assistant Superintendent in 2017, succeeding Mr. Charles Graham. Mr. Via’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Surry County Schools, and the district looks forward to working with him as he prepares for retirement, effective June 30, 2025.
Shannon DuPlessis, currently the principal of East Surry High School, has been named the new Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. She will assume her new role on July 1, 2025, following the conclusion of the school year at East Surry High School. Mrs. DuPlessis has also served as a principal at Meadowview Magnet Middle School, an assistant principal at East Surry High School, and a teacher at North Surry High School. She is currently enrolled in the Educational Leadership Doctoral program at High Point University.
Mrs. DuPlessis commented, “I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside and be supported by amazing educators during my career as a teacher, drop-out prevention coordinator, assistant principal, and principal. I have worked with amazing people and have been inspired as they work tirelessly every day to move mountains for our students and communities. The trust and support I’ve received throughout my career and Surry County Schools’ investment in my leadership and growth have shaped me into the educator and leader I am today. As I step into my new role, I look forward to investing the same care, dedication, and energy into the growth of our students, staff, and community, ensuring that we continue to build a future of opportunity and success for all."
Amy Harris, the current Director of Secondary Curriculum, will begin serving as Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services effective January 1. With her extensive experience in education and leadership, she is well-equipped to support the district’s ongoing academic initiatives.
Throughout her career, she has served in all levels of public education—elementary, middle, and high school. A former secondary math teacher, Mrs. Harris has also worked as an instructional coach, ML coordinator, testing coordinator, assistant principal, principal, and Director of Secondary Curriculum. In 2021, she was recognized as Surry County Schools’ Principal of the Year
Mrs. Harris earned her advanced degree in Educational Administration and Supervision and also holds a Superintendent’s License from East Carolina University.
“Surry County Schools holds a special place in my heart because of the wonderful people who make it truly one-of-a-kind. Throughout my career in education, I’ve been blessed with many opportunities to serve children and work alongside dedicated educators and leaders. I deeply value building relationships and collaborating with others. I am committed to working together with our staff, students, families, and community partners to create opportunities and provide the support every child needs to succeed,” said Mrs. Harris.
Neil Atkins, current Director of Accountability and Career and Technical Education (CTE), will step into the role of Director of Safety, overseeing efforts to ensure secure and supportive learning environments across the district’s schools. Mr. Atkins has previously served as a teacher, principal, and director. In 2012, Mr. Atkins was named the Surry County Schools’ Principal of the Year.
Dr. Shelley Goins, a seasoned leader in curriculum development and educational leadership, will serve as the new Director of Secondary Curriculum and Accountability, helping guide programs that prepare students for academic and career success. Dr. Goins has served as a teacher, instructional specialist, curriculum designer/trainer, assistant principal, and principal.
Superintendent Dr. Travis L. Reeves expressed his excitement about these leadership transitions: “I am grateful to work with a Board of Education and a leadership team that shares a unified vision of Designing Dreams and Growing Leaders. These leadership transitions highlight our commitment to investing in the personal and professional growth of our leaders, equipping them with opportunities to serve in roles that align with their strengths and the needs of our district. While change can bring challenges, it also drives growth and helps individuals discover their best. I look forward to working alongside this dedicated and dynamic team as we continue to make a positive impact for the students and families we serve.”
These changes reflect Surry County Schools’ ongoing dedication to fostering leadership development and helping all students and staff discover their best. The district remains committed to providing world-class educational opportunities for all students and creating a culture of leadership and excellence.
