Central Middle School hosted the district MathCounts competition on Friday, December 8, 2023, to prepare students for the regional event at Winston-Salem in February 2024. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
The competition lasted about two-and-a-half hours, using the same format that will be used at the regional competition. Each segment was timed, some done individually and some as a team. Some segments allowed calculators and some did not. Each segment comprised the scoring for individual and team honors.
This is a great competition for all students in our middle schools who love mathematics! This district-wide competition is a wonderful time for our students to practice for the Regional Event in February. This year, Central Middle School swept the entire MathCounts competition with a stellar performance by their students! Central Middle School’s team won the overall team competition. Members of the team are (from L-R) Coach Josh McMillen, Lluvia Guarneros, Lorraine Garcia-Correa, Sebastian Frausto, and Ryan Li.
The individual winner comes from the results of the individual rounds, including the Sprint and Target Rounds, while the Showdown Winner comes from the Showdown Competition. The Showdown completion is where students go Head-to-Head in a best-of-3 format. The first student to outscore the other after 3 questions would move on to the next round. In showing the strength of their overall team, Central Middle landed 4 competitors out of the 10 finalists. Sebastian Frasuto of Central Middle made it to the Final Four, while Ryan Li defeated Caden Ward of Meadowview Magnet Middle School. Ryan Li won the Showdown Competition in addition to the Overall Individual Winner as well based on his score throughout the competition.
“MathCounts is a great, fun competition that engages and excites our students about math. It is important to provide our students with STEM-focused learning experiences. Today was just another example of the great work in our school system, " stated Dr. DeAnne Danley, Assistant Superintendent.
