Metal Detectors at Athletic Events

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are metal detectors being used at athletic events?

Surry County Schools is committed to the safety of all students, staff, and community members. The introduction of metal detectors is an additional measure to help ensure that our athletic events remain secure and free from potential threats. This measure is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance school safety and follows the success of our clear bag policy.

Will metal detectors be used at all athletic events?

Metal detectors will be implemented at certain athletic events. We want to ensure consistency in safety procedures across all schools in the district.

How should families and students prepare for the use of metal detectors?

Families and students are encouraged to arrive early to allow extra time for security screenings. Please review the clear bag policy to ensure compliance. Remember to remove any prohibited items before arriving at the event, as they will not be allowed through the metal detectors.

What types of items are prohibited at athletic events?

Weapons, including knives and firearms, are strictly prohibited, as well as any item deemed a safety concern by event staff. Please refer to the district's clear bag policy for details on permitted and prohibited items. If a prohibited item is detected, you will be asked to remove it from the venue or discard it before entering.

What happens if the metal detector goes off when someone walks through?

If the metal detector is triggered, attendees will be asked to step aside for further screening. A secondary screening will be conducted by staff, which may involve the use of a handheld metal detector or a visual inspection.

Will this cause long lines or delays when entering events?

We anticipate some additional time for security screenings, especially at the start of this new policy. To help reduce wait times, please arrive early, follow the clear bag policy, and be ready for screening when you reach the metal detector. We are doing our best to make the process as efficient as possible while maintaining safety.

Are the metal detectors safe for everyone, including those with medical devices?

Yes, the metal detectors we are using are designed to be safe for individuals with pacemakers, defibrillators, or other medical implants. If you have concerns, please inform staff, and they will conduct an alternative screening process.

How will privacy be maintained during the screening process?

We are committed to respecting the privacy and dignity of all attendees. All screenings will be conducted professionally and with discretion. If an additional screening is required, it will be done by a trained staff member.

Can I bring my bag to athletic events?

Yes, but only if it complies with the clear bag policy. Bags must be transparent, and any non-compliant bags will not be allowed into the venue. Small clutches and medically necessary items are permitted but may be subject to inspection. What happens if someone refuses to go through the metal detector?

To ensure the safety of all attendees, anyone who refuses to comply with security screening procedures, including walking through the metal detector, will not be allowed entry into the event. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work together to maintain a safe environment.

How long will these security measures be in place?

The use of metal detectors is intended to be a permanent part of our security protocol for certain athletic events. We will continuously review and assess the effectiveness of these measures, making adjustments as needed to ensure a safe environment.
