2024-2025 School Calendar Feedback is Open Now!
The Surry County Board of Education has accepted multiple draft calendars for public comment for the 2024-2025 school year. This period is open for the next 30 days. Start dates include August 8, 2024, August 12, 2024, and August 26, 2024. At this time, only one of these calendars meets the requirements put forth by the NC General Assembly, which means August 8 and August 12 may not be an option under current guidelines. These calendars are available for public comment, and those who wish to contribute feedback are encouraged to fill out the attached Google form or contact the Surry County Schools Administrative Offices at (336)386-8211.

Good morning. This is Paige Badgett, principal of North Surry High School. I want to let you know that our school participated in a Practice Lockdown Drill this morning in cooperation with the Surry County Sheriff's Office. We are very proud of our students and staff because they responded quickly and did a great job with the practice procedures. Student safety is the highest priority for Surry County Schools and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, and we are all working diligently everyday to ensure the safety of children. The Governor's School of North Carolina is a 4-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by their public school unit or non-public school.
Each year Surry County is allowed to nominate a select (minimal- based on ADM - usually only 6 for Academic disciplines plus Arts that are also limited per discipline) number of students from our high schools to a committee in Raleigh to be considered for selection to attend.

Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m, today, Monday, August 28, 2023 due to potential flooding. All evening activities are canceled and after school childcare will close at 5:00 p.m.
Surry County Schools has worked with the National Weather Service and Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor weather conditions throughout the morning. Last night, areas of Surry County received 3-6 inches of rain. As a result, there was localized flooding in northern Surry County this morning.
More rainfall is expected this afternoon, which could create additional flooding issues across many areas of Surry County. Therefore, Surry County Schools will be dismissing at 2:00 p.m. to ensure students return home ahead of additional projected rainfall.

Flat Rock Elementary School will be dismissing today, Monday, August 28, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. due to power outage. All students will be sent home with bagged lunches. This outage is currently affecting over 1,233 Duke Energy customers and a crew has been assigned to restore power. The estimated time of restoration is 5:00 p.m.
At Surry County Schools, safety is our top priority. Given the unknowns of the situation as well as the potential flexibility of the estimated time of restoration, we feel it is in the best interest of families for Flat Rock Elementary to dismiss early. Surry County Emergency Services has informed the district that Pine Street will be open shortly after being closed temporarily this morning due to flooding.
At this time, Flat Rock Elementary School is the only school impacted, all other schools are on normal schedule today. The district is continuing to closely monitor weather conditions due to reports of heavy rain and flooding in areas of Surry County. The district is working with Surry County Emergency Management Officials to monitor conditions throughout the day.
